The Commonwealth of the Bahamas

Commonwealth nation

The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is an archipelago of approximately 100,000 square miles, extending over 500 miles into the Atlantic Ocean from fifty miles off the southeast coast of Florida. It consists of 700 islands. Nassau is the capital city of the Bahamas and is located on the Island of New Providence.

The Bahamas is an independent country since 1973, a member of the United Nations and has observer status to the World Trade Organization; it assumes the responsibility for administration of its own economic and political affairs.

Its political system is based on the British system of a two-house form of legislature, together with an executive branch of government (the Cabinet) formed by the Prime Minister and his cabinet ministers from the governing political party.

The legal system is modeled on British pattern and is independent of the political process, thus providing a well-established environment for international business. Legislation exists which makes it an offence to divulge information obtained from or in connection with clients’ business with the Bahamas.

In addition, the Bahamas has no income, inheritance, capital gain or corporate tax. Revenue is raised largely from custom duties, property tax and stamp duties.

Structured banking

The Bahamas has been providing banking and trust services to the international financial community since 1930. In addition to its tax neutral environment, the Bahamas, an AngloSaxon jurisdiction, provides a legal framework that is well suited to setting up trusts, foundations and offshore companies and to administering investment funds.

Today, boasting 35 of the 100 most prestigious of bank in the world, banking is the second largest industry in the country, with total financial assets of 200 billion at the end of 2007.
